Financial Performance

Net sales were $7.8 billion in 2023 compared to $8.5 billion in 2022, a decrease of $676 million. This was primarily due to lower prices and mix in the Packaging segment and lower volumes in both the Packaging and Paper segments. Domestic containerboard prices decreased 10.5% and export prices decreased 29.7%.

Net income was $765 million in 2023 compared to $1,030 million in 2022, a decrease of $265 million. This was primarily due to lower operating income in the Packaging segment, partially offset by higher income in the Paper segment. Income from operations decreased $346 million, or (24.3%).

EBITDA excluding special items was $1,603.8 million in 2023 compared to $1,885.5 million in 2022, a decrease of $281.7 million. This decrease is consistent with the decrease in net income and reflects the impact of lower prices and volumes in the Packaging segment.
