Waste Management, Inc. is North America's leading provider of comprehensive environmental solutions, offering services throughout the U.S. and Canada. The company's core business model focuses on managing waste at each stage, from collection to disposal, while also recovering valuable resources and creating clean, renewable energy. Waste Management holds a strong market position with the largest network of landfills in North America, operating in distinct geographic areas.
The increase in revenue is primarily attributable to higher yield in Collection and Disposal businesses, acquisitions, net of divestitures, increases in commodity prices in Recycling and Sales and WM Renewable Energy segments, and increased volumes.
Net income attributable to Waste Management, Inc. was $2,746 million, or $6.81 per diluted share, compared with $2,304 million, or $5.66 per diluted share, in 2023. The $442 million increase is due to an increase in income from operations discussed above, as well as lower income tax expense driven by benefits generated from our low-income housing investments and federal tax credits realized from our RNG investments.
Free cash flow was $2,317 million in 2024, compared with $1,902 million in 2023. The $415 million increase in free cash flow was primarily due to the increases in operating cash described above and increase in proceeds from the divestiture of non-strategic assets and businesses.
